Portrait Painting Classes

Carol Tarn offers tuition in portrait painting in her studio at the Chocolate Factory in North London. Her studio is large and fully equipped offering good natural light plus daylight bulbs for the evening.

Her classes consist of a group of no more than five pupils offering tuition tailored to each individuals needs. This offers the opportunity to experience personalised tuition in a relaxed studio environment.

Pupils will learn how to plan the process of creating a portrait from start to finish, how to create a true likeness, including the importance of the under-painting and colour charts. They will also learn the very useful skill of how to create a portrait purely from reference photographs.

Testimonials

"Carol is a fantastic teacher and though I have been attending art classes elsewhere for a few years, I have learnt so much more from Carol’s portrait classes. Having started the sessions by exploring the principles of under-painting in portraiture, working on a portrait from a photo through the use of three tones of colour, I have now moved on to applying these principles in oil painting."

- J.W

"If I were to see some of the paintings two years ago that Carol has drawn out of me in that time, I would not have believed myself capable of them. With gentle and entirely positive encouragement, she nurtures and develops her students, offering a steady, but unobtrusive stream of invaluable technical and artistic teaching that comes from a working artist with a passion for her subject."

- L.J

"I am very happy to recommend Carol Tarn as a teacher of oil portraiture. As an Art Psychotherapist I had minimal experience of oil paints or portrait painting. When I approached Carol, I was impressed by her portrait work displayed on her website. I wanted to be taught how to paint 'properly', drawing on traditional as well as modern techniques."

- Helena Siedlecka, Senior Art Psychotherapist

"Carol's lessons have been an absolute revelation to me. A place of quiet, congenial contemplation as well as learning and productivity, that have become a cherished, weekly oasis of calm and personal achievement for me, that has brought a much valued creative dimension to my life and given me an entirely other way of both appreciating and creating art. For us all, I think."

- L.J

" I can't recommend Carol highly enough - my daughter and I produced two lovely portraits under her careful supervision which now hang proudly in our dining room. We will most definitely be doing another course with Carol this year."

- Melanie Stokes, Company Director at Kindle Entertainment

"The studio atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed, but Carol keeps us to the task, and is good at giving tips and hints as we go along. She gives space for individuals to develop their own style, whilst anchoring the work in solid technique."

- Helena Siedleck, Senior Art Psychotherapist

"....your excellent and tactful teaching and of course the wonderful environment you have created in your studio - more serene and tranquil than an afternoon at a spa!"
