JULIAN GLOVER AS ‘SIR’ IN THE DRESSER
DUKE OF YORK’S THEATRE LONDON 2005
In this play by Ronald Harwood, Julian Glover portrays ‘Sir’ an ageing Shakespearean actor in mental decline. The setting is the backstage of a repertory theatre as he prepares to play King Lear for the 227th time. In this portrait, he is in the process of applying thick stage make-up before
putting on a long white wig. As the minutes tick by before the curtain goes up, there is a conflict between his huge ego and his inability to remember his lines. On this particular night there will be more drama than anyone could have imagined.
Julian Glover has had a highly successful career as a classical stage actor. He trained with the National Youth Theatre and has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1993 he received a Laurence Olivier award as best actor for his role in Henry IV at the Barbican. As well as stage work, he has regularly appeared in Television and Films where he is often cast as a villain. He has appeared in Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.
